Chats about singing, songwriting, and her favorite Valentine’s Day tunes

Kira Brown, who previously had sung under the name Honeygirl, is releasing her first EP under her own name in early 2019. Her music is rooted in country and her lyrics come from the heart.

“My songs are my stories, and I say all the time, I specialize in songs about my feelings—sad, happy, angry, fun, grief, love. Music has been a safe place for my self-expression, as it is for others,” she says.

Brown was born at Williams Air Force Base in Chandler, and grew up on a six-acre farm a few miles away. Today Phoenix is home, but she spends most weekends at the farm with her family in Queen Creek.

“I always wanted to sing and perform, but I was so shy growing up. Finally, in my 20s, I started taking singing lessons, appearing at my favorite karaoke bars, and challenging myself to sing in front of others. Performing has given me so much self-confidence in all areas of my life,” she says.

Her dreams of songwriting and performing her own music took flight after winning a few karaoke contests and becoming friends with Scott Johnson of the Gin Blossoms. They’ve now collaborated on many songs—including “Girl on the Side;” released on the latest Gin Blossoms album.

“Since Scotty is in a Grammy-winning band, working with him is a huge compliment and it’s also challenged me! I’m so proud of what we have created,” says Brown.
