Sanctuary on Camelback Resort and Spa
Since opening, Sanctuary on Camelback has had a focus on wellness. It’s been ranked in the top five hotel spas by Travel & Leisure magazine, and just completed a renovation of its Asian-inspired spa, updating the relaxation room and adding a quiet sanctuary.
The 12-room spa offers unique treatments, including the Tok Sen—and Sanctuary is the only spa in the country that offers this service. It’s designed to clear blocked energy by tapping the body’s meridian with a wooden instrument. The spa’s signature service is the Luk Pra Kope, a blend of Thai massage and medicinal herbs.
Named for the Japanese word for enlightenment, the Satori at Sanctuary is the ultimate in luxury and wellness. The fully customizable three-night journey includes three spa services, one private fitness session, unlimited group fitness classes and all meals.

Paradise Valley, AZ
For all the great resort spas in the Valley, CIVANA Carefree, which opened in April, is the first destination wellness property in the area. CIVANA is focused on attainability, sustainability and possibility. Because it is an à la carte program, except for the dozen complimentary classes offered per day, it is far more affordable than traditional destination spas.
The breadth of CIVANA’s classes is diverse. There’s an art workshop where attendees make angel cards, where the focus is not only on creating art, but tuning inward to hear what messages the angels are trying to send and translating that into affirmation cards. Other more traditional art classes, like watercolor and geometric art, are also offered.
There’s a unique wall yoga class, which uses the wall to help participants get deeper into poses. Aerial, hatha and restorative sound yoga classes are also available. Other fitness options include guided hikes, Balletone, and Gyrokenisis.
There are also culinary demonstrations, juicing and wine mixers offered throughout the week.
The 22,000-square-foot spa opened in December and is quickly becoming the centerpiece of CIVANA. In addition to an extensive treatment menu, the spa features a healing water circuit, and 29 treatment rooms including dedicated Vichy, Thai massage and couples rooms, and a labyrinth.
Rooms are comfortable with a minimalist design. There are two dining options, Terra the fine dining choice with both healthy and not selections, and Café Meto, a clean eating café featuring a largely plant-based menu and fresh juice bar.

Miraval Arizona Resort & Spa
One of the top destination spas in the world sits just 90 minutes south of the Valley in Tucson. Miraval
Arizona Resort & Spa, which was recently acquired by Hyatt, is known for its innovative mind-body programming, gourmet spa cuisine and the Life in Balance spa.
Miraval has always been one of my favorite wellness resorts because there is simply a special energy on property. It’s both invigorating and calming at the same time. I always find inspiration and new ideas, while also noticing my Type A personality come down a notch when I’m here.
With over 120 complimentary classes, lectures and wellness activities each week, Miraval delivers one of the most comprehensive wellness offerings in the state. The spa recently launched several new, ground-breaking services including Vasudhara, a water treatment where you wear noise-canceling headphones and a blindfold while the therapist guides your body in a series of Thai massage stretches, and The Path of the Jaguar, designed to alleviate fear through a Chakra-clearing healing practice led by a Shaman.
For the ultimate Miraval experience, stay in The Retreat, launched late last year. These 22 suites are very secluded and offer amazing views of the Santa Catalina Mountains. Retreat guests also have an exclusive menu of spa services that can be performed in their own suite.
