It Belongs to All of Us 1

Read this quote and think about it. It’s a popular quote that you’ve probably seen on bumper stickers and tote bags:

“We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.”

The quote became tied to Native American Chief Seattle during the environmental movement that started in the 1970s, but there’s little evidence to suggest that he said it.

Whoever said or came up with it, I’m more interested in its message—that the world doesn’t belong to us but to our children, and we need to think about how our current actions will affect the planet and future generations.

I’ll be the first to admit that I could kick my environmental stewardship up a notch. Yes, we recycle and use reusable grocery bags (when I remember to bring them). We don’t use plastic water bottles and I’m not a fan of waste so I have minimalistic tendencies.

But there’s so much more that I can—and should—do.

During the everyday busyness of life it can be challenging to keep in the constant mindset of “every little bit helps,” but I’ve got to keep my eyes on the prize. Nurturing and protecting this planet now means a better world for my children and their children and their children, and so on. That’s what matters the most.

In this issue, we’re highlighting several Chandler businesses and people who are doing exceptional work to lessen their carbon footprint. You’ll read about four local agricultural businesses that are working with the community to create a more sustainable environment. They’re all about supporting local farms, growing local food and helping others live a more eco-friendly lifestyle.

You’ll also see some mouth-watering springtime recipes created by award-winning chefs using seasonal ingredients that you can find right around the corner at a local farm or farmers market.

I’m excited for you to read about Recycled City, a local company that takes the messiness and work out of composting with its system of quick and convenient pick-ups for residents and commercial businesses.

And check out the 2018 Audi A3 Sportback e-tron, a sleek and modern car that’s getting rave reviews for being easy on the Earth.

Happy reading!
