I feel like there are two kinds of people: Those who make New Year’s resolutions and those who don’t. Which one are you? I used to be the former and, thanks to my charming Type-A personality (insert smirk here) I was pretty intense about it. It was black or white, all in or all out. When I made resolutions, I kept them—there were no excuses.
Nowadays, I’m older and have a family, home and career to manage so life is a bit messier and I live in the gray more than anywhere else. I’ve lowered my expectations and standards and have learned to give myself more grace (which is a skill that I believe can only be refined with time). And you know what? I’m still happy and life is great! So, there’s that.
That being said, I’m still lured to this idea of a fresh start in the New Year, but my resolutions are now more realistic. This year, I only have one and that is to be more present with my family. I’m going to put my phone down, turn off the TV and other screens, and soak up this time with them. My oldest starts kindergarten (!!!) soon. I’ve heard the “they’re only this little for so long” cliche many times and, if I’m being honest, I’ve rolled my eyes. But now, it’s setting in and I’m starting to get it.
I’ve made baby steps to stay true to my resolution. I order my groceries online so all I have to do is pick them up. I outsource certain housework. I utilize handy gadgets (hello, Instant Pot) in the kitchen to save time on cooking. I don’t say yes to every social function. I’ve found a sitter who meshes well with our family so my husband and I can go on semi-regular date nights and make our marriage a priority.
