Five Local Spots for Guilt-Free Fill-Ups
Maybe you overindulged on the holiday cookies and eggnog last month or perhaps you are determined to keep your New Year’s resolution to eat better. Whatever the reason, you want to eat more healthily. But you also want to enjoy eating out on those days when you are too busy or tired to cook.
Check out these five local restaurants that make it possible to find delicious and fresh food that is also good for you.
“We serve made-to-order salads, wraps, grilled paninis, fresh juices and smoothies,” says Darron Moffatt, one of the co-owners of Crisp Greens. Ingredients for salads and wraps are sourced as locally as possible; this includes romaine lettuce, tomatoes, beets and cucumbers. As for customer faves, Moffatt says the best-selling item is the CrispCobb, made with chopped romaine and kale, avocado, egg, bacon, red onion, cherry tomatoes, bleu cheese, a choice of protein and a mustard agave sauce. A close second is the CrispZona, which includes romaine lettuce, jicama, tomatoes, red onion, tortilla chips, avocado and a choice of protein topped with house-made lime-cilantro vinaigrette. “Ultimately we want to deliver the freshest, healthiest and most delicious food anywhere and because our ingredients are so field-fresh, we are able to deliver on that promise,” Moffatt says.

The name Modern Market says it all, notes Director of Culinary Operations Chef Nate Weir. “We prepare market fresh, whole ingredients from scratch to create modern takes on delicious, better-for-you meals,” he says, adding that the result is food that not only tastes good, but also makes diners feel good. Modern Market’s menu is “incredibly clean,” Weir says, meaning it is free of additives, preservatives and “anything your grandma can’t pronounce.” The winter seasonal menu was recently introduced and Weir says customers are loving the Salmon Curry Bowl, made with sustainable Atlantic salmon, braised kale, heirloom rice and yellow sweet potato curry. The Basil Chicken Sandwich and the Thai Coconut Salad are also big hits. “We are out to prove that nutritious food can be delicious, with a holistic view of healthy eating based on clean, wholesome, high-quality ingredients,” Weir says.

Pomegranate Café is an organic, vegan and vegetarian “crafted with love” café that features locally sourced ingredients. “We make wholesome, delicious food and drinks using nutrient-rich ingredients,” says co-owner Cassie Tolman. Everything is made from scratch, from the lattes steamed with handcrafted syrups to earthy breads, tasty bowls, vibrant salads and fresh juices. “Many other restaurants use the word ‘organic’ on the menu and just sprinkle a few organic ingredients into their dishes. At Pomegranate, over 98-percent of our ingredients are organic,” Tolman says. Customer faves include the RAW Gila Monster Nachos, RAW Tacos Vivos and Grilled Cheese Napoleon Sandwich, as well as the weekend brunch with the Country Biscuits and Gravy Skillet and gluten-free pancakes. “Revitalizing food and pure flavors are at the heart of what we do,” she says.

The tag line at Fresh Millions is “Millions of ways to eat fresh and healthy.” Thanks to the abundance of fresh fruit and vegetable mix-ins to choose from, diners truly can create endless combinations. Fresh Millions’ specialty item is the delicious Hot Bowl, which is made-to-order with a choice of sauce, base, fresh mix-ins and protein, all quickly prepared in a wok-style cooking method. Other healthy menu choices include salads made with leafy greens and house-made dressings. “Our menu options keep in mind health-conscious diners who want options that fit their lifestyle, without compromising taste,” says Director of Operations, Lydia Moore. “If you wish to eat like a flexitarian, you would have no problem making menu selections that would be vegan on one day, then a vegetarian and then a carnivore on the next.”

Serving up made-from-scratch food using whole ingredients is what Original ChopShop does best, says Media Relations Manager Sohana Kutub. “To us, this means offering real, quality food for everybody—our whole menu of protein bowls, superfruit bowls, fresh-squeezed juices, protein shakes, chopped salads and sandwiches is entirely customizable.” Kutub adds that Original ChopShop offer vegetarian and vegan options as well as foods that are free of gluten, dairy, lactose and soy. The Teriyaki Chicken Grilled Protein Bowl, containing grains, greens and protein, is a popular item with diners, Kutub says. “Our guests appreciate having a comfortable place where they can enjoy a wholesome meal with family and friends, grab a fresh juice or shake after a workout, or drink a coffee while working on their laptop.”
