Chopped, Fresh and Healthy 3

Fit Food For Any Lifestyle

When you find a concept that works, the possibilities are endless. That’s exactly what Ryan and Caitlin Jocque discovered when they opened the Original ChopShop Co. in Old Town Scottsdale in February of 2013. Their passion was to create a place that would offer a healthy menu with different twists on ingredients. The fast, healthy cuisine was just the right fit for today’s lifestyle. Only five months later, a second location opened in Tempe and nine months after that, the Chandler location opened. Once you visit, you will attest that the Jocque’s blended all the right ingredients to create the right spot for any occasion.

The ambiance at the Chandler ChopShop is fantastic. It is located in Historic Downtown Chandler in the original building that housed a bank in 1919 with its high ceilings, bank vault door, and exposed brick. Remnants of the original tile can be found in the restaurant and at the entry where the word “Bank” is inlaid. Hanging on a wall across from the open kitchen, you’ll find photographs of previous businesses all adding to the charm of this location.

Two pet-friendly patios are available with fresh water and pet treats. One is located at the front which connects to an open bar and the other is located at the side with water misters and an adjacent children’s play area.

Extensive Menu, Reasonable Prices

An extensive menu includes breakfast items that are offered daily until noon and weekends until 2 p.m. Choices include toasted sprouted grain bagel, sprouted grain bagel sandwich, egg-veggie hash, Zen bowl, balanced bowl, cheat day wrap, sunrise wrap and open-faced sandwich. Also, fresh baked goods are made daily and include a variety of gluten-free choices.

The menu offers 12 enticing, freshly squeezed juices. I sampled the Kale Cleanse made with kale, orange, apple, lime and ginger. It was delicious! I also tried the Slim Squeeze made with pear, strawberry, orange, apple, kiwi, lemon and mint and it was very refreshing. You can even create your own by selecting four items from kale, beet, ginger, lemon, lime, pineapple, pear, strawberry, grapes, kiwi, mint and parsley.

The menu’s Between the Bread section lists eight sandwiches made from whole wheat bread or put on a whole wheat or gluten-free wrap. I found the Moroccan Turkey to be moist and flavorful with its chopped turkey, avocado, roasted red pepper, grapes, cucumber and lettuce with a yogurt sauce. Other selections include grilled chicken with prosciutto; tuna salad; chicken and kale; veggie and hummus; grilled sirloin with caramelized onions and a club.

Want more of a meal? The Grilled Protein Bowls are incredible with a generous serving of roasted broccoli, cauliflower, carrot, mushroom, snap peas, green onion and cilantro. Choices include Thai Chicken, Teriyaki Chicken, Sirloin, Shrimp and Tofu and include a choice of brown rice or sweet potato hash and a slight charge for forbidden rice or quinoa. I sampled the Thai Chicken made with a delicious peanut and Thai coconut sauce. Yummy!

Next I tried the Danish and the Beet salads and was amazed how each was so flavorful I couldn’t decide which I liked best. The Danish had house greens, arugula, smoked almonds, Danish bleu cheese, shaved pears and apples, dried currants and dates and is tossed with red wine vinaigrette. I really enjoyed the combination of flavors and textures. The Beet salad had roasted golden beets on house greens and arugula with sour apple, goat cheese, cashews and golden raisins tossed with red wine vinaigrette. All of the salads can have a protein added or can be made into a wrap.

Protein shakes, parfaits, fruit bowls and a kid’s menu are also available. In addition there’s a small bar for an after work cocktail, cold beer or glass of wine. Food restrictions are not a problem and the kitchen will try to accommodate those requests. A small marketplace is filled with grab-and-go items as well as novelty gifts.
